KHL playoff started

Dinamo Moscow is already 2-0

Salavat Yulaev Ufa - Avangard Omsk series 1-1
Two OT in two games were good for a victory for each game. If in the first challenge a big error by goalkeeper Fomichev gave the W to Salavat, in the second a flawless performance by Tsaregorodtsev (38 saves) led Omsk to a 0-1 win after the shoot out.

Salavat Yulaev Uva - Avangard Omsk 0-1 SO (0-0; 0-0; 0-0; 0-0; 0-1)

Ak Bars Kazan - Barys Astana series 1-0
Two goals by Tony Martensson and Aleksey Morozov lift the home team to a comfortable 4-2 win over Barys. The home team was up by two goals after less than ten minutes and thus the Kazakhs will have to work very hard in order to avoid a potential first-round sweep.

Ak Bars Kazan - Barys Astana 4-2 (3-1; 1-0; 0-0)

Lokomotiv Yaroslavl - Neftekhimik Nizhnekamsk series 1-1
After the first match's sensation, when Neftekhimik won in Yaroslavl after the overtime, the Krikunov's team could not repeat themselves as Lokomotiv triumphed 5-1 with four different scorers as Mikhnov scored two. Up by three goals after the first period, Lokomotiv controlled the score in the second and third periods, saving some energies for what looks like a long series.

Lokomotiv Yaroslavl - Neftekhimik Nizhnekamsk 5-1 (3-0; 0-1; 2-0)

CSKA Moscow - Lada Togliatti series 0-1
Lada managed to surprise CSKA in their playoff's first match with an outstanding defensive performance, shutting them out to finish the match 0-2 in Moscow. Two third period goals and a shut out by Koshechkin gave to Vorobiev's team a deserved lead.

CSKA Moscow - Lada Togliatti 0-2 (0-0; 0-0; 0-2)

Atlant Mytischi - Traktor Chelyabinsk series 2-0
Smooth play by Atlant made them go up by two games and it seems that the third one will be the last. After a 3-0 performance in the first game, Kanareikin's team followed with a 5-1 game and the quarterfinals are now on sight.

Atlant Mytischi - Traktor Chelyabinsk 5-1 (1:0, 2:1, 2:0)

Metallurg Magnitogorsk - Torpedo Nizhny Novgorod series 1-0
In the first game of the series, Metallurg got a rather easy victory against Torpedo thanks to a double by big man Denis Platonov and single goals by Kudrna and Kaigorodov. Mirnov helped with three assists.

Metallurg Magnitogorsk - Torpedo Nizhny Novgorod 4-1 (0-0; 1-0; 3-1)

Dinamo Moscow - Dinamo Riga series 2-0
The Dinamo's derby is going on easy for Moscow as they took the two games lead after a 4-0 and a 7-1. They now can go to Riga with a good mood and maybe to sweep the series there. But surely it won't that easy in Latvia.

SKA St. Petersburg - Spartak Moscow series 0-1
In another first round surprise match, Spartak beaten SKA in St. Petersburg 3-2. Slovak Branko Radivojevic scored the game winning goal.

Hoje tivemos mais um dia de playoffs na KHL, com quatro jogos.
E puuuuta que pariooo, o SKA perdeu de novo! Tamo fudido!!!

KHL Playoffs' third day's recap
CSKA tied it up, Metallurg, Ak Bars and Spartak went 2-0

Ak Bars Kazan - Barys Astana 4-2
Ak Bars will travel to Kazakhstan with the series on hand as they won the second match with the same score of the first, 4-2. Kazan's Jukka Hentunen won the personal challenge against Astana's Konstantin Glazachev three goals to two.

Ak Bars Kazan - Barys Astana 4-2 (1-0; 2-1; 1-1)
Series: 2-0

CSKA Moscow - Lada Togliatti 2-1
CSKA Moscow managed to tie up the series with a nice performance against defensive Lada Togliatti, who scored the go-ahead goal after fourteen minutes with Kazakh Maksim Belyaev. Sergei Shirokov equalized the score midway through the match with a powerplay goal, and former Lada forward Stanislav Zhmakin added the marker that fixed the score to the final 2-1.

CSKA Moscow - Lada Togliatti 2-1 (0-1; 1-0; 1-0)
Series: 1-1

Metallurg Magnitogorsk - Torpedo Nizhny Novgorod 4-2
With three goals in the first period Metallurg Magnitogorsk doubled the lead against Torpedo scoring with four different players. Czechs Jan Marek and Tomas Rolinek scored their first post season goals, while Igor Mirnov added other two assists and is now with five helpers in the first two contests.

SKA St. Petersburg - Spartak Moscow 1-2 OT
An overtime goal by Kazakh Dmitri Upper gave the first match point to Spartak as they are sensationally up by two games after the first two meetings in St. Petersburg. Lyuduchin opened the dancing with a nice individual effort at the eighth minute. Spartak controlled the match but when the scoreboard signed twenty-seven seconds to the end of the match Maksim Sushinsky picked up a rebound after a shot by Sergei Brylin to tie it up. In the overtime SKA's defense was already a bit off and allowed a quick rush to Spartak, finalized by Upper after a nice combination between Baranka and Ruzicka.

Dinamo Moscow and Atlant get on the quarterfinals
Both teams swept the opponents

Avangard Omsk - Salavat Yulaev Ufa 3-2 OT
Getting a second consecutive win, Avangard has now the intriguing opportunity of eliminating the reigning champions in the next home match. After a scoreless first period Medvedev scored the game's first goal spoiling the guests' first true scoring chance. In the third period Jaromir Jagr scored his first playoff goal to tie the game up, being followed after less than one minute by a great one timer by Aleksandr Popov. The games seemed over, but just eight seconds to the final horn Vitaly Proshkin skated to the net and with a two meter, one-time touch sent the game to the OT, where Jakub Klepis has been the game winner for the second consecutive night. Avangard has now the upper hand on the knife.

Avangard Omsk - Salavat Yulaev Ufa 3-2 OT (0-0; 1-0; 1-2; 1-0)

Neftekhimik Nizhnekamsk - Lokomotiv Yaroslavl 0-3
With a big 3-0 away win Lokomotiv gets the match point, but they have to win in Nizhnekamsk and surely in the fourth match it will be harder. 30 saves by Georgy Gelashvili, who's probably KHL's hottest goalkeeper as far as now, led Heikkila's team to a deserved triumph, thanks also to the goals scored by Markus Nilson, Vitaly Vishnevsky and Dmitri Semin.

Neftekhimik Nizhnekamsk - Lokomotiv Yaroslavl 0-3 (0-0; 0-2; 0-1)
Series: 1-2

Traktor Chelyabinsk - Atlant Mytischi 1-5
With another easy win Atlant got the pass for the quarterfinals. The first line has been once again instrumental, scoring the first and the fourth goal of the game, respectively with Leschev and Mozyakin the second goal has been a nice shot by Maksim Semenov, followed by a powerful slap shot by Vadim Khomitsky. With the game stalling at 4-0 Traktor found their lone goal of the match with veteran Andrei Nikolishin. In the garbage time Aleksandr Korolyuk found the 5-1.

Traktor Chelyabinsk - Atlant Mytischi 1-5 (0-0; 0-3; 1-2)
Series: 0-3

Dinamo Riga - Dinamo Moscow 3-4
With a determinated performance Dinamo Moscow swept Dinamo Riga, winning 4-3 in Latvia. This was a kind of surprising result as it was expectable that Dinamo Riga could win at least one home game, but they could not keep their 3-1 lead in the third period. A goal by Dmitri Afanasenkov at the fifty-eighth minute meant the end of the series after only three games.

KHL quarterfinals picture almost complete

Avangard Omsk - Salavat Yulaev Ufa 4-1
And at the end the reigning champions have been sensationally eliminated in the first round by the playoffs' last seed. In front of over 10000 spectators, Avangard played yet again another very good match giving no chance to the opponents as they were down by two goals after the first twenty minutes of play thanks to the goal by Viktor Aleksandrov and the precious double by Dmitri Vlasenkov. Taratukhin temporarily tied the game up after five minutes with a nice snap shot from the slot, but it was simply not enough. A third period goal by Jaromir Jagr has thus been the icing on the cake for the home team and its supporter, free to celebrate what seemed impossible only a couple of team prior of the start of the playoffs.

Avangard Omsk - Salavat Yulaev Ufa 4-1 (3-1; 0-0; 1-0)

Barys Astana - Ak Bars Kazan 1-2 SO
And also the second foreigner team of the KHL has been swept in the first round just like Dinamo Riga. In a hard fought match Barys tried hard to get a win in front of the home crowd, but they only managed to prolong the game to the shoot outs, where the experience and the talent of Aleksey Morozov has been unmatched by Barys, who can though label as positive their first KHL experience, once again just like Dinamo Riga

Barys Astan - Ak Bars Kazan 1-2 (0-0; 0-1; 1-0; 0-0; 0-1)
Series: 0-3

Lada Togliatti - CSKA Moscow
As said this is the unique series that isn't over yet, even if things can change tomorrow as Lada unexpectedly beaten CSKA and is now with the upper hand on the series. The game has been hard fought and the home team discovered themselves up by two goals in the last minute of play thanks to an empty net goal by youngster Evgeny Bodrov. A late goal by Konstantin Korneev sweetened the defeat, but Bykov will have to work hard in order to prevent what would be a disappointing first round exit.

Lada Togliatti - CSKA Moscow 3-2 (1-0; 0-1; 2-1)
Series: 2-1

Torpedo Nizhny Novgorod - Metallurg Magnitogorsk 3-6
Despite what we announced in the playoffs' preview, Metallurg had easy time against Torpedo in all the games of the series to come out with a first round sweep. The game in Nizhny Novgorod has probably been a little bit tougher, but Magnitogorsk still won by a three goals margin, being up 5-1 after half of the match. Jan Marek found some scoring consistency finally and netted a double.

Torpedo Nizhny Novgorod - Metallurg Magnitogorsk 3-6 (0:2; 3-3; 0-1)
Series: 0-3

Spartak Moscow - SKA St. Petersburg 3-2
With another one-goal victory, Spartak swept SKA St. Petersburg for another first round surprise. The guests scored the go-ahead goal after only eighty seconds with a deflection by Igor Makarov, doubling the advantage after fifteen minutes with a great wrist shot from the left circle by David Nemirovsky. But in the second period Spartak's head coach Milos Riga changed the music and the Muscowites reversed the game. At the twenty-third minute Maksim Rybin tapped in a blue line slapshot by Baev during a double powerplay stretch, at the thirty-second Branko Radivojevic tied the game with a short range shot and at the thirty-eighth minute Maksim Rybin scored again fooling the opponent defense and Robert Esche with a smart wrap around marker. It will be interesting to see if Spartak can repeat themselves in the playoffs' next round.

20 seconds of fire, CSKA skates to the quarterfinals
With a 3-1 win against Lada Red Army gets the pass for the playoffs' next round

With a great end of second period, CSKA beaten Lada in the fifth and last match of the playoffs' first round. Bykov's team had some troubles today too, but everything went good for them even despite the little brawl that arisen in game 4's ending.

The score has been opened on a double powerplay situation by a big slap shot by the usual suspect Denis Kulyash, after a nice combination between Anton But and Sergei Shirokov. Lada tied it up in the second period's start with a quick counterattack by Evgeny Ketov, who put it in also thanks to Markkanen's akward intervene. The game was intense and hard fought, but a great flash by CSKA in the second period's start gifted them the victory as they put the puck in the back of the net twice in a 20-second span.

Firstly Oleg Saprykin deflected in a very nice powerplay assist from Vadim Epanchintsev, then, twenty seconds later, Anton But scored past Koshechkin with a great wristshot from the right circle after a face off won by Schastlivy in the neutral zone.

After the second intermission Vorobiev tried to shake his team up by switching goalkeepers and thus icing Kazakh Sergei Ogureshnikov, but the move didn't pay out as CSKA came off with a huge 3-1 victory that means a derby series in the quarterfinals against Dynamo Moscow.

Ak Bars Kazan vs Avangard Omsk 0-2
Avangard Omsk is finally showing their real strength and sensationally made another victim today as they managed to shut out Ak Bars in Kazan. Thanks to two goals by defenseman Nikita Nikitin and Denis Ezhov, as well to a strong 31 saves performance by Aleksandr Fomichev. Bilyaletdinov bravely started young Stanislav Galimov, who played well rejecting 18 shots, but the home attack hasn't delivered and thus the defeat. The second match will be different as Ak Bars is expected to react and fight back.

Ak Bars Kazan – Avangard Omsk 0-2 (0-1; 0-1; 0-0)

Moscow's first derby came won by Dinamo thanks to a very good performance of their most representative players. After less than two minutes of play Matthias Weinhandl exploited a hole in CSKA's right flank and served the unchallenged Denis Tolpeko right on front of Barulin, free to tip it in for the 0-1. Four minutes later the home defense was off again as they allowed a scramble goal to Sergei Zinoviev, not really a big player. Moreover, Barulin should have dealt better with Rachunek's slap shot. In the end of the first period a powerplay goal by Denis Parshin seemed to spark CSKA a bit, but in the remaining two periods they could not get past Eremeev, thus allowing the opponents to take the first victory of the series.

Ak Bars Kazan - Avangard Omsk 3-2 SO
Avangard this time didn't manage to win it all, but surely looked good in the afternoon challenge in Kazan. The home team, who has to play without the starting goalkeeper Fredrik Norrena because of an hand injury, opened the score early in the first period with a big slap shot from the left circle by Danis Zaripov, just to get caught back by the guests late in the second period thanks to defender Anton Belov. Ak Bars tried hard in the last period and got the go-ahead goal with frontman Aleksey Morozov, but Avangard didn't give up and tied again with only four seconds to play with the usual suspect Dmitri Vlasenkov. In the overtime both teams could ont find the net despite one powerplay chance in favour of each team, and the game went to the shoot outs, where Aleksey Morozov's goal in the last attempt gave the win to the home team, tieing the series up.

With a strong home performance Lokomotiv got the first match of the series surprising the opponents who were taught to have a slight psychological advantage after the sensational 3-0 against higher touted SKA St. Petersburg. Riga's team could not make it through this time, surrending to Heikkila's team 3-1 despite being up by one goal thanks to Ruzicka's third playoff marker.

After a hard fought match Atlant got the first victory of the series. A bad error by Emery, who tried to play the puck too relaxed, freed up Tomas Rolinek at 14:49, but Atlant's tie wasn't late: a couple of minutes later the goalkeeper was again playing a role in an allowed goal as Mezin could not deal properly with a shot from the point by young Aleksandr Bumagin. In the overtime a big slapshot from the left side by Andrei Zubarev - who's playing really well in these playoffs - gave the victory to Atlant.

Dynamo Moscow - CSKA Moscow 5-1
Anyone who was waiting for a CSKA reaction has been left disappointed as the two teams for the third straight time seemed to be not in the same league. CSKA's management will have to think a lot this summer in order to understand what's happened to the team in the season's most delicate moment. Vyacheslav Bykov has already announced that he won't left the Red Army, but many things in this season have been questionably. Firstly, the foreign players. Excluding Markkanen, the other imports seem not to be good enough to play in the nowadays' KHL. Mika Hannula played just three playoff games. Jonathan Hedstrom only scored one assist in eight games. Wahlberg has been fired midway through the season. This is not the contribution a contender should get from the import players, especially thinking that today Karel Rachunek scored a double and Matthias Weinhandl is the league's top playoff scorer.
Tonight's game, just like the other two, has been dominated by Dynamo, who found the first goal after ten minutes with a slap shot by Aleksei Zhitnik. A blue line shot has been the cause of the second goal too, Rachunek the author. Midway through the game the home team went up by three after a rebound tap in by Denis Tolpeko. Ivan Khomutov scored the 3-1 goal at the thirty-fifth minute, but it was too late to have any weight over the match. In the third period Dynamo scored other two times, firstly with a nice rush by Rachunek, then with a rebound goal by Kalyuzhny after a slap shot by Daniil Markov. Dynamo is the first team qualified for the semifinals.

Avangard Omsk - Ak Bars Kazan 4-2
The return of Fredrik Norrena hasn't been enough for Ak Bars as they got beat by Avangard in Omsk 4-2 and are now on the edge of the elimination as Jagr's team will need only a further home win to get the pass for the semifinals.
In a packed Omsk arena the guests scored first with a deflection goal by Aleksandr Stepanov. At the fifteenth Viktor Aleksandrov spoiled a positioning error by Norrena to make it a tied game. In the second period a great wrist shot by Tony Martensson from the right put the guests ahead, but it didn't last long as ten minutes later Ryabyikin tied it up with a nice wristshot from the slot after a good pass by Aleksandr Popov. Two minutes later, a touch by Jaromir Jagr in a scramble in front of Norrena resulted in the 3-2 goal. In the dying seconds Dmitri Vlasenkov was hacked down by a defender while skating towards the empty net and thus Avangard has been awarded with a further goal. Game four is scheduled for tomorrow.

If it was unexpected to see Avangard skate past Salavat and be able to lead the series against Ak Bars, what can be said about such a huge result? The guests have been up by three goals after seven minutes of play thanks to the markers by Petrov, Alekseev and Kapanen. After this, Avangard pretty much stopped playing and thus causing this embarrassing result which they must forget as soon as possible in order to get another blow-out in the fifth and last game of the series.

Spartak Moscow - Lokomotiv Yaroslavl 4-5

After a spectacular match Lokomotiv resulted as the second KHL semifinalist team. Despite being down by two goals in the second period after the goals by Knyazev and Maksim Rybin (very nice goal for him after a great feed by Dmitri Upper), Lokomotiv didn't surrender and tied it up in the second period. First Mikhnov put it in the right corner then, midway through the game, the young Aleksandr Kalyanin placed the puck between Kochnev's legs for the 2-2. Late in the second period defenseman Aleksandr Guskov scored with a nice blue line slapshot (and originally celebrated throwing the stick on air). In the third period Spartak tried hard and eventually tied again with a close range shot by former Traktor player Denis Baev. One minute again Mikhnov scored his second goal of the match, but the game wasn't over yet: at the fifty-second minute Ivan Baranka deflected in a superb pass by Aleksandr Drozdetsky. But when the crowd was waiting for the overtime Lokomotiv scored the goal that meant the pass for the semifinals with a powerful one timer by Jozef Vasicek after a great pass by Aleksei Mikhnov. The series went thus won by Lokomotiv.

Scoring one goal per period, Metallurg got the go-ahead point in the series and can now have the advantage of a match point. Jaroslav Kudrna opened the score after sixteen minutes in a quick two-on-one lead by Czech team mate Jan Marek. In the second period Metallurg doubled the advantage: Marek rushed in the offensive zone, but his shot got stopped by Andrei Zubarev. Ray Emery poke checked it away, but Malenkikh got the puck back and shot directly in the back of the net. In the third period a slap shot by Vitaly Atyushov from the right circle closed the match. Metallurg has now the upper hand in the series.

KHL Semifinals Preview

Ak Bars will meet Dynamo, Lokomotiv will challenge Metallurg

Note: KHL semifinals and finals will be played with the best-of-seven format

Ak Bars Kazan vs Dinamo Moscow
This series features a challenge between two very good, stacked teams. Dinamo Moscow heads to the semifinals with a perfect 6-0 records as they needed three games only to beat their precedent opponents, Neftekhimik in the first round, CSKA in the second. Beating CSKA 3-0 has been a remarkable result, especially with such a score. Dinamo owns a very good lineup featuring in goal who's now probably the best KHL goalkeeper with Georgi Gelashvili: Vitaly Eremeev. The defensive corp is very good too, with such high level players like Daniil Markov and Karel Rachunek.
Ak Bars had to fight hard to down the playoff's top surprise of Avangard Omsk and might be a little tired after the OT win in the decisive game 5, but surely their top names are as good as the ones owned by Dinamo. It will be an interesting, long series.

Prediction: Moscow 4-2
Right now Dinamo looks like the top contender for the Gagarin Cup. Their defense is hard to beat, as well as their goalkeeper. Plus their offensive corp is solid too. Ak Bars will fight hard though, and with such players as Aleksey Morozov, Danis Zaripov and Tony Martensson, anything can happen.


Lokomotiv Yaroslavl - Metallurg Magnitogorsk
Heading to the semifinals with a similar path, Lokomotiv and Metallurg are two teams that might put on a good battle. Both teams are gifted with talented first two lines and it will be interesting to see which team will prevail. Probably Lokomotiv has a little edge because of the good impressions after the 3-0 over Spartak in the quarterfinals, but Metallurg had to skate past a better opponent, Atlant Mytischi and probably they will push hard to get a title this season after the lost game against the New York Rangers in the Victoria Cup and the CHL debacle. Lokomotiv will have to play without injured Zbynek Irgl and Jonas Akerman.

Prediction: Yaroslavl 4-2
Lokomotiv seems to be in very good shape, especially with their go-to guys Aleksei Yashin and Aleksei Mikhnov. Gelashvili has also been one of the best KHL goalies this season, stats-wise. Yaroslavl will most likely get this, but they must not underrate Metallurg, who has the player to win against any team in the league.

Ak Bars skates past Dinamo Moscow

4-1 the final score

Ak Bars Kazan surprisingly got the first match with a good score, 4-1, that very little people could imagine before the game. Zinoviev got his personal revenge as he scored the sole goal for Dinamo, but his former team got the last laugh.

Kazan scored the first goal of the game after only three minutes with - guess who? - Aleksey Morozov, after a centering pass by Danis Zaripov. Not much later the home team scored again after a good breakaway by Jukka Hentunen, but the referees rightfully voided the goal as the Finn started his effort in an offside position. In the second period, after a missed penalty shot (and some good saves by Eremeev), Ak Bars doubled the advantage: Buravchikov had all the space in the world to shot, Eremeev saved, but an unchallenged Kazionov tipped it in. Where was the guest defence? Rachunek was unexplainably a good couple of meters behind the Ak Bars' forward.

In the third stanza things didn't change. Dinamo behooved to reverse the outcome of the match, but instead they got the third and the fourth goals in their crease: firstly Hentunen made it 3-0 with a terrific slapshot after only forty-nine seconds, then a great combination between the Badyukov - Stepanov - Petrov line resulted in the fourth marker, with the latter as goalscorer. After this, Dinamo benched Vitaly Eremeev and iced Mikhail Biryukov. In the garbage time Sergei Zinoviev scored for Dinamo after a great backhand pass by Aleksei Kalyuzhny. The series' second match is scheduled for Friday March 20th.
